Rumah Alun is a restored rumah kutai with three rooms and a long verandah. The river is forty steps from the stairs. Sleep late, walk to laksa, watch the boats come home to Sayong at dusk.

rumahThe house
Pak Long Yusof built this house on chengal posts for his seven children. When we bought it in 2017 the roof leaked in eleven places. We spent two years replacing boards one at a time, keeping every carved vent panel we could save.
What you get today is an old house that works: air-cond, hot water and fast Wi-Fi, without the tiles and chrome. We live two houses down the lane and come by when you need us.

Book one room, or all three for your family. Prices are per room per night and include breakfast. Friday and Saturday nights cost a little more.
The verandah room
The quietest room, off the long verandah. Morning light comes through one tall window, and the river is loud enough to hear at night but never loud enough to keep you up.
The river room
Our most asked-for room. A wide window sits right over the water with a rattan chair in front of it. Couples book it for anniversaries; parents book it for the daybed.
The family loft
Up a short timber ladder under the roof. Children love it. The ceiling slopes, so tall adults will duck once and then remember. Best for families with kids aged 6 and up.
The whole house, all three rooms for up to 9 guests: RM 620 a night on weekdays, RM 720 on Friday and Saturday. Two-night minimum on long weekends.

Not here, so you can plan
No pool, no TV in the rooms (there is one in the living room), no lift. The bedrooms are 12 steps up. The nearest 24-hour shop is a 7-minute drive.

Most of these are simply how kampung houses have always worked. We send them again on WhatsApp the day before you arrive.
sehariA day around the stay
No schedule is needed. But first-time guests often ask what to do, so here is the day most of them end up having.
7.00 am
Mist sits on the river for about an hour after sunrise. The kettle is on a timer, so the tea is ready before you are.
8.30 am
Nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf, a boiled egg, and teh tarik in a flask. Roti bakar with kaya if you asked for it the night before.
10.00 am
A flat 2 km ride on the bicycles under the house. Go before 11, when the gold dome is at its best and the road is still cool.
12.30 pm
Walk to the stalls in our food guide below. The river-town laksa here is sour, thick and served with a fistful of mint.
3.00 pm
Nap in the river room, read on the daybed, or cross the bridge to Sayong to watch potters shape labu jars by hand.
7.00 pm
Carry the chairs down the 40 steps. The sun drops behind Sayong around 7.20 pm and the boats come home.
9.00 pm
Tuesday is pasar malam night in town. Other nights, light the charcoal under the house and eat by lamplight.

Rumah Alun is on the east bank of the Perak River, a short ride from Kuala Kangsar town. Search for the house by name in either app.
Take the E1 North-South Expressway and leave at the Kuala Kangsar exit. It is 6 km, about 10 minutes, to our gate. From Kuala Lumpur, allow 2 h 40 min without traffic.
The station is 3 km away. Tell us your train and Hafiz will pick you up for free, up to 9 pm.
Three cars fit inside the gate. Look for the labu jar at the front post. The stairs are on the river side of the house.

Yes, for every room. The tray comes to your door at 8.30 am: nasi lemak or roti bakar, a boiled egg, fruit and a flask of teh tarik or kopi. Tell us about allergies when you book.
Yes. All three rooms together sleep 9 and cost RM 620 a night on weekdays or RM 720 on Friday and Saturday nights. You get the kitchen, the verandah and the grill to yourselves.
The bedrooms are upstairs, 12 steps up the front stairs with a handrail. Guests with a walking stick have stayed comfortably. It is not wheelchair accessible, and we would rather tell you now.
The kitchen is kept halal: no pork and no alcohol in the house. There is a prayer corner with the qibla marked, and the nearest mosque is 900 m away.
A 30% deposit by DuitNow QR or online banking holds your dates. The balance is due on arrival by DuitNow, card or cash. You get a receipt by email for both.
Cancel 7 days or more before check-in for a full refund of the deposit. Within 7 days, we move your deposit to new dates within 6 months instead.
The house stands on posts 1.8 m high, as kutai houses were built to. The garden can get wet during the November rains; the rooms never have. We message every guest if the river rises.
